Eight

Kavya.

The midnight air on the penthouse balcony was sharply cool, carrying the distinct, heavy scent of wet asphalt and sea salt from the Arabian Sea below. We had long finished our sandwiches, leaving the empty plates resting on a low teakwood table, but neither of us made a move to go back inside. The sprawling Mumbai skyline stretched out before us in a glittering, damp panorama. I leaned fully back against the plush cushions of the outdoor sofa, my legs draped sideways across Aryanโ€™s lap. His hand rested comfortably on my thigh, his thumb tracing slow, absentminded arcs against the dark fabric of my trousers.

We talked for hours in a quiet, drifting cadence, jumping effortlessly between heavy logistics and completely trivial childhood memories. We calculated the exact time difference between Mumbai and San Francisco, debated the optimal frequency of his flights, and then spent twenty minutes arguing over which of us had actually broken Mrs. Sharmaโ€™s living room window with a cricket ball when we were twelve. It was the same seamless banter we had shared for two decades, but the underlying frequency had shifted. Every glance held a new, electric weight. Every accidental brush of his shoulder against mine felt deliberate and anchoring.

"Are you sure your firm isn't going to mind you shifting your hours to accommodate a California time zone?" Aryan asked, his dark eyes studying my face in the soft amber glow of the balcony lights.

"I'm the lead strategist on the merger," I reminded him, tipping my head back to catch the cool breeze. "I essentially write my own schedule for the next three quarters. Besides, the bi-continental coordination will look fantastic on my next performance review. It demonstrates global adaptability."

Aryan let out a low, rumbling laugh, the sound vibrating against my feet. "Of course. Only you could spin a trans-Pacific romance into a corporate asset."

The quiet settled around us again, peaceful and absolute. I watched the steady sweep of a lighthouse beam cutting through the distant, foggy horizon. It was getting incredibly late, and the adrenaline of the day was finally giving way to a deep, heavy exhaustion settling in my bones.

Aryan shifted slightly, his hand sliding from my thigh to wrap loosely around my waist. He leaned in, burying his face in the crook of my neck, his warm breath sending a cascade of shivers down my spine. "Stay with me tonight?" he murmured, his voice a rough, gravelly whisper against my skin.

Every instinct in my body screamed to say yes, to simply fall asleep wrapped in the safety of his arms and wake up to the sunlight streaming through the penthouse glass. But the pragmatic, highly scheduled side of my brain immediately flashed a warning light.

"I can't," I sighed, running my fingers through his thick, dark hair with genuine regret. I tilted my head to look at him, offering a small, apologetic smile. "I have a massive strategy alignment meeting at eight o'clock tomorrow morning, and I don't have any of my office clothes here. Plus, I need to come back here tomorrow evening to actually help you pack, since we successfully avoided doing any real work tonight."

I paused, leaning forward to press a soft kiss to his jawline. "Maybe another day."

Aryan.

A brief wave of disappointment washed over me, but it was immediately eclipsed by a profound, overwhelming wave of affection. Maybe another day. She wasn't just turning me down; she was promising me a tomorrow. She was promising me a future. And the fact that she was already stressing over her eight AM strategy meeting was so quintessentially Kavya that I couldn't help but smile.

"Alright," I conceded, pulling back just enough to look at her, my hands still firmly anchored on her waist. I began calculating my own schedule for the next day. "I'll pick you up from the office tomorrow evening, and since you so confidently critiqued my culinary skills earlier, you will cook dinner."

Kavya let out a bright, genuine laugh, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Okay, deal. But I already warned you about my pasta. If we end up ordering pizza at ten o'clock, that is entirely on you."

"I'll take the risk," I grinned, entirely unfazed.

"Good." She gracefully untangled her legs from my lap and stood up, smoothing down her emerald silk blouse. She looked down at me, extending a hand with a playful, commanding arch of her brow. "Now, drop me off?"

"Your wish is my command," I replied, taking her hand. Her fingers immediately laced through mine, the fit so perfect and natural it felt as if we had been walking like this for our entire lives.

We walked hand in hand back through the penthouse, the silence of the massive apartment feeling entirely different now than it had when she first arrived. It wasn't cold or isolating anymore; it was just waiting for us to fill it. I grabbed my car keys from the kitchen island, and we stepped out into the private foyer, waiting for the elevator to hum its way up to the top floor.

The ride down to the basement parking garage was quiet, but Kavya didn't let go of my hand once. She leaned slightly against my arm, watching the floor numbers tick down with sleepy eyes. When the steel doors slid open, I led her through the damp, echoing concrete structure to where my car was parked. I opened the passenger door for her, waiting until she was safely tucked inside before walking around to the driver's side.

The drive from Worli back to Bandra was a masterclass in contentment. The roads were mostly empty, the usual chaotic swarm of Mumbai traffic reduced to a few solitary cabs and late-night delivery riders. The neon signs of storefronts reflected off the slick, wet pavement, casting a cinematic glow across the interior of the car. I kept my left hand firmly resting on the centre console, and Kavya kept her hand securely locked in mine the entire way.

Kavya.

When Aryan finally navigated the narrow, waterlogged streets of my neighborhood and pulled into the familiar basement parking lot of my apartment building, a strange sense of dรฉjร  vu hit me. Just twelve hours ago, we had parked in this exact spot, suffocating under the weight of unspoken words and a terrifying, impending departure. Now, the heavy dread was completely gone, replaced by a warm, glowing certainty that radiated through my entire chest.

He cut the engine, the sudden silence of the garage wrapping around us. He didn't just unlock the doors and let me walk up alone. He climbed out, walked around the hood of the car, and took my hand again, leading me toward the elevator.

We rode up in companionable silence, my shoulder brushing against his with every slight sway of the steel car. When we reached my floor, we walked down the quiet hallway to my front door. I fished my keys out of my bag, the metal clinking loudly in the stillness, and pushed the door open.

The stack of cardboard boxes we had sealed last night were still sitting right where we left them in the entryway. Aryan stepped inside right behind me, gently kicking the door shut.

Before I could even turn on the living room lights, his hands were on my waist.

He pulled me in, wrapping his arms securely around my back and burying his face in my hair. It was a fiercely tight, grounding hug, the kind that communicated exactly how much he had needed this day to end exactly like this. I melted against him instantly, wrapping my arms tightly around his torso, closing my eyes and simply absorbing the absolute reality of him.

"I am so incredibly glad you didn't let me get on that plane without telling me," he whispered into my hair, his voice thick with emotion.

"Me too," I breathed, turning my head to rest my cheek directly over his heart.

He pulled back just slightly, keeping one arm wrapped around my waist while his free hand came up to gently cup my cheek. His thumb brushed over my cheekbone, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that completely stole the breath from my lungs. He leaned down, capturing my lips in an absolutely amazing, breathtaking kiss. It was slow and deep, a passionate promise that held the weight of a decade of waiting and the absolute certainty of everything that was to come.

When he finally pulled away, we were both breathless. He let his forehead rest against mine for a long, lingering second, a brilliant, soft smile touching the corners of his mouth.

"See you tomorrow, sweetheart," he murmured, his thumb stroking my jawline one last time.

A fierce, uncontrollable blush rushed all the way up to the tips of my ears. The casual endearment, spoken with such effortless devotion, made my heart perform a complicated series of acrobatics in my chest.

"I love you," I said, the words slipping out with, undeniable clarity.

Aryanโ€™s smile widened, lighting up the dim entryway. "I love you too. Now go to sleep, strategist."

He stepped back, opening the front door and offering me one last, lingering look before stepping out into the hallway. The door clicked shut softly, leaving me alone in my apartment. I leaned back against the solid wood, touching my fingers to my still-tingling lips, knowing with certainty that I was exactly where I was always meant to be.
